I’ve been reflecting recently on the story of Abraham and Issac from Genesis 21-22. It’s important to understand the whole narrative in order to feel the weight of God’s command to Abraham to sacrifice his son. God promises Abraham in Genesis 12 that his lineage will become a great nation and bless all the nations of the earth (12:1-3). More specifically, God tells Abraham in 15:5 that he will have as many descendants as stars in the sky. Amazingly, even without a male heir, Abraham believes God’s promises will come to pass (15:6).
